Black History Month - What do you think?

Established in 1976, Black History Month is recognized in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, among other nations. It is intended to celebrate the contributions blacks in the societies in which they live. In our case, it is the role that African-Americans have played – and continue to play – in American history and life.

There are always the obvious famous African-Americans to focus on during this time: Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and others. I have chosen to focus this year on the contributions of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. I hope you enjoyed the film that we watched in class, and I hope it made you think beyond the “obvious” African-Americans that we usually focus on during celebrations like this.

Use your comments here to express your ideas about the importance of Black History Month. Is it necessary to have a month dedicated to the contributions of black Americans? What about other months like this – Hispanic Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, and other such celebrations? Who are some of the African-Americans that you think best represent the meaning of this month?

I want to hear what you think and feel. If you disagree with what someone writes, you should comment on it but you MUST remain respectful. I will not tolerate any personal attacks, rude, or inappropriate comments. Most importantly – HAVE FUN!!

the person that i think would most likly represent black history mounth would probly be Rosa Parks because of the incident on the bus where she was told to go to the back of the bus but did not and got fined for what she did. I think that she should not have gone to jail and that blacks should be treated just as well as whites are treated.this is just my opion you guys and i liked the video and i learned a lot about black history mounth and Jakie Robinson. :)

In my opinion, I think Martin Luther King jr is a better example than Rosa Parks. He was the one that led people away from thoughts of discrimination. He worked very hard to inspire people not to judge by the color of your skin, but by whats on the inside. He wasnt worried about his safety, he was working to make the world a better place in discrimination directly.I disagree with haily because although Rosa Parks was famous in fighting discrimination, Martin Luther King made it his life's work.

The person that i think that would represent black history mounth would be Jackie Robinson. Because he was the only black man that was wanting to play baseball when the it was only white people playing. Even when Jackie was being was being threaten by white people he still played.

Good job to both hailey and calub but, the person I think most represents black history month is my favorite, Micheal Jordan. The rteason I pick MJ is beacause he was one of the greatest athletes ever regardless of his color. MJ showed that anyone can play a sport and be good at it no matter what race they are. MJ will always be one of my role models and someone I always look up to.

I think Rosa Parks should most likly represent black history month because she sat in the front of the bus when she wasn't suposed to she was suposed to sit in the back with the rest of the blacks. Then a someone needed a seat so the bus driver told her to sit in the back but she didn't so she got arrested.

i still think martin luther king is the best figure because just like what cole said, martin luther king didnt back down, no matter how much he was threatened or even injured by white people.also he tried to approach it in more of a direct way, which showed he was not afraid of white peoples threats.good job on jackie robinson and micheal jordan though!

I think that all the comments were good but I think that Jackie Robinson would be the best to represent black history month because he broke the color barrier. Took all those harsh comments and still was a phenomenal baseball player.

I think that Martin Luther King and Jackie Robinson would represent black history month. First Martin Luter King, He led the civil rghts movement, and he led the March on Washington. And Jackie Robinson became the fist black person to be in the MLB. He had to take all of the racism. So I think that Black History Month is a good thing!

I think that black history month is a good way to learn more about black history. Durring black history month I think I mostly look up to Bill Cosby. He focuses more on education within the black community and discourages the use of baggy pants, curtain rap songs, and modern trendy behavior of the black community. I would have thought of Micheal Vick as a person I look up to but he tortures little dogs, I don't like him anymore. :)

I think that Martin Luther King mostly represents black history. I think that he cared the most about black rights and abilities. Black history is an important thing, think of all of the things that African Americans have invented. Slavery was a dumb thing blacks and whites are just the same and should have the same respect. Nobody should be judged by what they look like but what is inside their body.

I think that Caleb and Cole mostly summed it up. good job, keep it up

Black history has a lot of people who have done things that have made everybody think wow that person is awesome. For example, MLK A.K.A Martin Luther King JR.Back then, when there were aloud to have slaves, Martin Luther King JR. did not like that at all.So he protested. He put himself and his family in grave danger. He went through all the harsh and bad things the white folk were doing to him.He got a lot of blacks to help him protest. They did every thing you can think of until he got what he wanted in the world. He got killed on a podiom by somebody in the building next to him.Martin Luther King JR. was one of my Black Heros in my life.Another one is Rosa Parks. One day she after a long day of work she pays to get on the bus. When a all of the white seats where taken, up the whites could sit in the black section which is not right. So, when Rosa Parks was sitting in the black section, and minding her own buissenes. When a white folk comes up to her and tells her to move she stands her ground and says, "no". After that, the bus driver told her, "either you get so she can sit down or i'll have you arrested"."no" said Rosa parks so the bus driver then got the to have her arrested.Rosa Parks has also been one of my favorite heros yet.Last, but never least Jackie Robertson has broke the color barrier for the sport baseball. No matter what they said to him or made fun of him he never lost sight of his goal. All these people and more a my black history mounth heros.

There are many African-American people who has changed the world intirely such as Martin Lufer King JR. he made it so that man isn't juged a defferant ways just because his color. Jackie Robinson changed life by he was the first black to play Major Leag Baseball in his time, and in the video I herd that he was cursed at, people throw things at him, and he was made fun of many times.I thing black History mounth is very important because it teaches us about anouther race besides cacassion and allows us to become more intellegent about black people such as Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Martin Lufer King Jr., even Opra. The other day I saw a skit about African-Americans that I never knew about it made me relize there are more black people who has done more than play baseball, give speaches, or be put in prison because they didn't give up there seat in the back of the bus. So in this small essay I tell you relize that whites just didn't change this country or world we live in.
