On Friday, we spent nearly the entire class time discussing the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement of the 1960s. It has been 40 years since the death of Dr. King, and about 45 years since spoke to the nation about his dream. So, in 2008 can we say that Dr. King's dream has become a reality? What evidence do we have today that his dream has come true? Or, do we have further to go to reach that dream? If you don't feel his dream has come true yet, what do you think still needs to be done? Can we do anything to help the relationship between blacks and whites improve?
Remember, I want to know what you think and feel. I'm not looking for memorized answers or for you to tell me what you learned from the video. I am providing links to both of the speeches that we discussed and to the video that we watched. I encourage you to watch and listen. In fact, encourage your parents and siblings to watch and listen with you. It's important to always reflect on holidays that celebrate those that have sacrificed their lives to make our world a better place.

I think that Dr. King's dream has become a reality. Blacks and whites can go to school together and they can work together. Blacks and whites are considered equal. There is still some racism, but not like it was in the 60's. We can learn more about each others backgrounds and maybe this would help us understand our differences and cut back on the racism.
I think that Dr.King's dream has beacome a reality. Black and whites can do stuff that people wouldn't even think about in the 1960's. Dr.King's speech "I have a dream" was an empact on everyone. For example, who is leading the democratic poles in the election, thats right Barack Obama an African American. Black and whites are created equal because of Dr.King. {Great blog drew} :-)
I can agree that Dr.Kings dream has become a reality in many ways. But, in other words it has not really become fact that blacks and whites get along as he wished.I'm not saying there has been no improvement.I mean look around you- blacks and whites are best friends, sharing school batthrooms, water fountains, churches, and more. But as I was saying before, there is still racism and yes it hurts but it is true and thats how Dr.King died. Truly, I hate to say it but right now blacks and whites are fighting at this moment not even thinking about a word Dr.Martin
Luther King has said. There is more peace and understanding because of this man Dr.Martin Luther King who risked his own life for peace in the world because he had a dream.
Dr. King's speech has become reality in 2008. Blacks and whites can go to the same restaurants, schools, play on the same sports teams. Blacks and whites have the same opportunities to get a job, or education, or to serve the public. With the many problems such as the war in Iraq and the economy we should put racism behind us.
I do believe that Dr. King’s dream has come true, but not entirely. There are still some people that think that segregation was a good thing, and they think that it should be the way it was 50 something years ago. But over all I think martin’s dream did come true because the laws that occurred many years ago are not the laws now. There aren’t any separated drinking fountains or segregated buses no matter what the color of your skin is everyone in the United States has the same equal rights.
I think Dr.King's I have a dream speech has come a reality because now blacks and whites can do stuff together. But back in the 1960's you couldn't do anything together. The "I have a dream" speech took a great impact to make blacks and whites equal. So now people that are blacks can vote and run for president. Now we live with each other and interact with each other.{Nice comment Kaylee}:-)
I agree with haley, back in the 60's you had to drink from a water fountain with a sign that says whites, or blacks. And that Dr. King's dream has became a reality. As haley said that speech " I have a dream" Has had an impact on our world since his murder. I also agree with Kalee saying that we still have to deal with racism, and that is how he died from a person mot beleiving in what he said. And it is sad that some people do not like the way it turned out but i sure do!
Nice comments everybody!!!
I think that Dr. King's dream has changed how life is look at now. If the world was the same as it was during Dr. King's era that means the friends that are black that I know will have never meet me or even got along. If I was in Dr. King's shoes I would fight for African Americas rights also. But the world might have changed alot by excepting Blacks in restruants, schools, and much more, but there is still racis people out there wishing that every thing was the same as it was 60 years ago. and these people are everywhere, such as stores, Schools, and even in your own nabiorhood. Like the speech " I Have a Dream " I hope one day there will be no dicimagration or racism.
I think that MLK's speech did have and impact on our life today. for example,it would not be likly for you to walk into a building and see all of one race just because of him. I do agree with james, cole, and i strongly agree with kaylee,
Yes, because his dream was that everyone had equal rights, for there to be no segragration. I found that one piece of evidence was that now schools were integrated that now blacks and whites drink out of the same water fountain can sit where ever they want on the bus.I`m trying to say is things are now diverse. yes things aren`t fully solved people are still prejudice and I think there should be a law against it. {GOOD JOB EVERYBODY} :) :( :!
I think that Martin Luther King was fighting for a really great cause. Some of my best friends are African American. There still may be some racism but at least everyone has equal rights.
Dr.King has become a reality in many ways. There are still some racism gonig on everywhere at all times. In some countrys there is still racism going on.Back when Dr.King was fighting for blacks rights to have freedom the racism was far worse than it is right now.If a black spoke out when a whites were talking they could be killed for doing that.Today I know a lot of black people who have a lot white freinds.Blacks can go to the same schools as whites an drink out the same water fountain, and play the same sports that whites can play. Some white kids back then and now think that racism is no big deal, but racism is huge! If some white person was in the blacks shoes when it was blacks couldn't go to the same school or even talk to a white person they would feel really bad. Dr.Kings dream over time will evently come ture!
I think that Dr. King's dream did come true. Blacks and whites can now drink from the same water fountain, and go to the same bathroom. There are still people that are racist, but not like it was in the 1960's. After Dr. King said his speech the world changed. Dr. King's dream lives on!
Dr. King's speech has become reality. Black and white people aren't separated because of the color of their skin anymore.I also agree with James that it isn't perfectly how Dr. King wanted it. There is still some discrimination throughout the nation. However, it is nothing like in the 60s. Much has inproved on discrimination in America since the dreadful day Dr. King was killed. In 2008, white and black people share schools, neighborhoods, churches, and much more.
sorry mr. veliz could not find our classes blogs.... but i think dr.kings dream has become something great to our nation now there is rarery raceisom! im sooo happy he faught for the right to do that i think it is encouragement and hope and it was the best thinf to do!
